Get to know China's wind farms ------Cuomei Zhegu Wind Power Station

Introduction

Cuomei Zhegu wind power project is located at the northern foot of the Himalayas in the town of Zhemgang, Tsomei County, Shannan City, Tibet, between 5000 meters and 5200 meters above sea level, with the highest elevation of the nacelle reaching 5157.8 meters, which is currently the highest wind farm in the world.

Cuomei Zhegu wind power project in Tsomei County has a total installed capacity of 22 MW, with 10 sets of 2.2 MW wind turbines installed and a 110 kV booster station built to support the project. After the project is put into operation, the annual equivalent full-load utilization hours can reach 2684 hours, the annual online power can reach 59 million kilowatt hours, the annual use of about 18,300 tons of standard coal can be reduced, emission reduction of 45,600 tons of carbon dioxide, with good economic benefits and environmental benefits.

Construction

The decentralized wind power project in Zhemi County, Tibet, located in Zhemi Town, Zhemi County, Shannan City, Tibet Autonomous Region, at the foot of the northern Himalayas, is by far the highest wind farm in the world, with an average altitude between 5,000 and 5,065 meters. The project is invested by Three Gorges Group, EPC contracted by China Electric Power Construction Institute, and constructed by Hydropower Fifth Bureau, with a total installed capacity of 22 MW. The project includes: five direct-drive units with a single capacity of 2.2 MW, five double-fed units with a single capacity of 2.2 MW, and a 110 kV booster station.

The theoretical annual power generation capacity of the wind farm is about 100.77 million kWh, and the annual online power is about 59.04 million kWh, with a total investment of about 220 million yuan.As a national demonstration project of ultra-high altitude wind power research, Tsomei Zhegu wind farm is of great significance to explore and solve the characteristics of high altitude wind energy resources, geographical characteristics and climate characteristics.

In addition, the project also has important practical value for wind farm site selection, wind measurement, design, development and construction, operation and management programs, as well as wind turbine equipment component selection, insulation design, processing technology, control strategies, etc. The successful grid connection of the project will form a series of solutions for the development of ultra-high altitude wind farms, provide research results and engineering reference for the development of large-scale wind power in similar areas, and will help the construction of China's ultra-high altitude water and scenery multi-energy complementary base.

Challenges

The climate of the project area of the decentralized wind farm in Tsomei, Tibet is alpine, with short summer time, long winter and spring time, low temperature, high wind speed and thin oxygen. In the construction process, it is necessary to overcome various difficulties such as long transport distance for equipment supply, low efficiency, lack of oxygen on the plateau, strong ultraviolet rays, low temperature, wind, rain and snow. The environment is harsh and exceptionally difficult.

The place is covered with snow and ice all year round, and there is a lack of oxygen in the high temperature. Many personnel are dizzy and nauseous due to the lack of oxygen, and it is difficult to sleep late at night. The second hurdle is the serious shortage of professional and technical personnel, site management personnel and information clerks. The third hurdle is the construction organization, fan foundation pouring must be a one-time pouring success, each pouring should be controlled between 12 to 18 hours, there can be no gaps and breaks in the middle, the slightest inadvertence, there will be fault, cold seams and other quality accidents.

Due to the extremely low atmospheric pressure and air density in ultra-high altitude areas, only 60% of the coastal areas on average, resulting in a serious drop in wind turbine thrust, more likely to cause blade stall, the construction of the project presented a greater challenge.

But the majority of builders lack of oxygen is not lack of spirit, hardship is not afraid of suffering, adhere to the "safety first, respect for science" principle, they overcome strong ultraviolet rays, hail and frost, overcome heavy snow, sand, extreme lack of oxygen and other harsh environmental conditions, serious organization, scientific decision-making, careful deployment, and finally successfully completed all construction tasks.

Significance

The location of the Tsumetzhegul wind farm has an alpine climate with dry air and thin oxygen, but the rich local wind resources provide unique conditions for wind power generation. The smooth commissioning of the wind farm is of epoch-making significance for the development of wind power in ultra-high altitude areas in Tibet. It has not only made a new breakthrough in the technology of ultra-high altitude wind power project development, but also accumulated rich research results and engineering experience, which will continue to lead the further development of ultra-high altitude wind power projects.
