The Francis turbine is a kind of reverse impact turbine, invented by The American engineer Francis in 1849, also known as the Francis turbine, or spoke turbine. Water flows radially into the turbine in all directions, and then approximately axially out of the turbine, which consists of an upper crown, a lower ring, and blades. In recent years, the trend is high head, high capacity, high specific speed and high efficiency.
Characteristics of francis turbines
Compact, efficient and able to accommodate a wide range of heads, Francis turbines are one of the most widely used types of turbine in the world. When the water flows through the working wheel of this type of turbine, the water enters in a spoke direction and flows out in an axial direction, so it is also known as a spoke axial flow turbine.
It is suitable for heads from 20 m to 700 m. The mechanism is simple, stable and efficient, but is generally used in the medium head range (50 m to 400 m). The output of individual turbines varies from a few tens to hundreds of thousands of kilowatts. Currently, the maximum output of this turbine exceeds 700,000 kW. It is one of the most widely used turbine types. Chinese units with a single capacity of 700 MW operate at Three Gorges, and Xiangjiaba uses an 800 MW mixed-flow unit
Composition of Francis turbine
Francis turbines are simple in structure and the main components include the worm shell, seat ring, water guide mechanism, top cover, runner, main shaft, guide bearing (see turbine guide bearing), bottom ring and tail pipe, see Figure 1, which also shows the water flow direction. A snail shell is a water guide assembly, shaped like a snail shell, usually made of metal and having a circular cross section. Said snail shell seat ring is placed between the snail shell and the guide flap and consists of an upper ring, a lower ring and a number of uprights, said snail shell seat ring being directly connected to the snail shell; the uprights are wing-shaped and cannot be rotated, also known as fixed guide vane. The water guide mechanism consists of movable guide vane, speed control ring, curved arm, connecting rod and other components. The rotor is directly connected to the main shaft (see turbine spindle) and is the rotating part of this type of turbine. The runners consist of the upper crown, lower ring, drain cone and a number of fixed vanes, the shape and mating dimensions of the components varying depending on the head used. The exhaust pipe is the turbine drainage component that directs the flow of water downstream from the rotor outlet. The exhaust pipe is generally elbow-shaped, the same as the straight conical exhaust pipe commonly used in small turbines
